How to make your own game of Candyland Sight Word Edition –
(I partnered with my mom on this idea. She’s a retired teacher and reading specialist.)
1. Print this blank game board template from Donnayoung.org. Or choose from these other game board templates.
2. Write a sight word in each blank box from the list of words you are currently working on with your child. Our words include Go/go, To/to, The/the, Look/look, At/at, In/in, and My/my. Be sure to write each sight word with both a capital and lower case letter, but not in the same blank box. I also chose a few blank boxes to write out, “Go to the”, “Look in the”, and “Look at the.”
3. Draw the mint, peanut, lollypop, and cupcake (optional) from the official Candyland game on 4 of those squares.
4. Color in the squares with your child to match the colors found on the official Candyland game. We had fun finding the color pattern that repeated as we colored in the squares together. Our colors include purple, yellow, blue, orange, green, and red (in that order).
5. Cut sheets of card stock into smaller rectangles (I made 4 cards per piece of card stock) and write a sight word on each card. It’s important that you use both capital and lower case letters. For example, I wrote “The” on a card and “the” on another card. Also write each sentence on a piece of card stock “Go to the”, “Look in the”, and “Look at the.” Set this deck of cards aside for step 6B.
6. Play Sight Word Candyland and have fun! There are 2 ways to play. (Skip A below if you do not have the official Candyland game with the color wheel spinner)
A) Use the color wheel spinner and game pieces from the official Candyland game. 1st player (youngest player goes first) spins and moves their game piece to the next color space on your game board that matches the color on your spinner. Just like in Candyland, if your spinner lands on double purple, the player moves their game piece two purple spaces. This is why it’s important that the colors you drew on your Sight Word Candyland game board match the colors in the official Candyland game. When you land on a sight word or sentence, say the word(s), spell it, and say the word(s) again. If your spinner lands inbetween colors on a picture of candy, move your game piece to the space with its matching candy drawn on your Candyland game board. Continue to take turns until 1 player reaches the end first.
B) Place your deck of cards (you made these in step 5) in a pile with the sight words facing down. If you run out of cards during the game, simply shuffle your deck of cards and turn them back over with the sight words facing down again. Use game pieces from the official Candyland game, or any reasonable objects around your house. 1st player (youngest player goes first) turns a card over from the top of the deck. Say the sight word or sentence, spell it, and say the word(s) again. Move your game piece to the next word or sentence that matches the word(s) on the card you turned over. Continue to take turns until 1 player reaches the end first.
Tips: It works best to write a sight word on the last blank space, even though there is a picture of a stop sign on that space. Also, be sure to write a sight word on the “Shortcut” and “Go Back” spaces as well. Just make room for these words.
