DIY April Showers

I know that April showers bring May flowers, but I was still caught off guard when we woke up to rain yesterday. Rather than feel bummed that we’d be spending a lot of time inside, I jumped for joy (literally) because I had a special project just in mind for a rainy day. Ironically, I came across the blog A Little Pinch of Perfect and Katie’s adorable DIY Rain Cloud Mobile just a day earlier. It’s such an adorable craft project to do with your kid and a great way to initiate conversation about weather, clouds, and rain. All I had to do was mention an art project that involved cotton balls and my daughter had already ran to get the bag of cotton balls before I finished my sentence. She informed me that she knew “the cotton balls must be the clouds for our science project, mommy” and wanted to know what we’d be using for rain because we couldn’t use water. Her guesses included rice and cereal before I told her it didn’t involve food and would be a surprise. We used items we had on hand at home – two-sided craft paper with dark and light blue on either side, clear Elmer’s glue, cotton balls, white string, an empty greek yogurt cup, scissors, tape, and a ruler.

Note: Even though 2 rain drops end up being taped together with the string in-between, we still made sure that the rain drops were a different shade of blue on either side just for fun.

I encourage you to make Katie’s DIY Rain Cloud Mobile with your child this month! Visit A Little Pinch of Perfect for details on how to make one for your home.

Be sure to scroll down for pictures of our very own Rain Cloud Mobile! KC requested that it be hung up directly above her bed where her pillow lies and she couldn’t be more proud.
