Nursery for Shaky Dad Part 2

The Land of Nod company never hesitated when asked if they would be willing to collaborate with us on this project. We have so many people we would love to thank personally from the CEO to the men who delivered our furniture in the pouring rain!  Several people at The Land of Nod have been instrumental in this project including Creative Director, Danielle Kurtz (so grateful for her initial “yes!); PR and Social Media Strategist, Rachel Dorton (she took the time to listen to our vision and facilitated our collaboration); and Business Sales & Design Service Concierge, Renee Hayes (this lady had the HUGE task of coordinating delivery of all the furniture and furnishings DURING the holiday rush). Not even touching on the products, just these people that The Land of Nod put in front of us says how high a quality this company is. After several of the phone conversations with “Nod” people we would look at each other with tears in our eyes over the willingness and generosity they represented. All of the furniture, bedding, and some of the soft goods were gifted by The Land of Nod for this project. We will always thank them with all our hearts!

Then, there was Sara. Sara Polacek is the Interiors & Event Designer Manager at The Land of Nod and we were so honored to have her design the room.  Design services is a wonderful perk for any LON customer who needs help designing a room, closet, or even corner.  I’m sure all of the designers are incredibly talented, but we’re pretty confident we ended up with the BEST! :)  Throughout numerous phone calls, emails, and Pinterest board exchanges she listened to what we needed and dreamed the room to be, then spent hours on her own designing everything we wanted and SO much more. Her creativity amazed us and wonderful heart shined through in everything she did for us.

Our challenges were listed in the Part 1 post to this series, but basically the goal was to design a room that is functional for the whole family and accessible for Dad who has specific issues with Parkinson’s Disease.  In doing so we hope to share a room that can be furnished with existing available products that is helpful with people with all types of physical challenges.  Our designer, Sara, took all of this into consideration when creating the room. Remember, this is a shared room with big sister, KC, Sara made sure to make her feel just as special. She perfectly designed two distinct spaces in one room with “nods” to both gender yet blending colors flawlessly. The lower profile crib is placed just inside the door making access for Dad and Mom quick and easy while not disturbing KC asleep in her Unicorn clad bed. The dresser is low enough to double as a changing table and is one pivot step away from the crib. The dresser drawers have no knobs or pulls, but rather long slotted cutouts easing dexterity issues and hand tremor. What is often a vertical clear bookcase was reimagined by Sara to be hung horizontally above the dresser changing area to make easy access for diapers, wipes, and other baby supplies. The rug in the room is carefully placed away from the door, crib and changing area as to not offer a tripping hazard late at night. On it, in the corner, sits a glider that is both perfect for a nursing mom and easily used by dad at his best and worst.

We are still waiting for a few things to arrive and are busy finishing the details of the room, but we wanted to share with you some of the designs as we wrap up Part 2. Complete before and after photos will be here soon most likely modeled by KC and her new baby brother.  Also, coming up…find out how 4moms helped with our project!
